". . . you should choose the finest day in the month and have yourself rowed far away across the lagoon to Torcello. Without making this excursion you can hardly pretend to know Venice." - Henry James

Spend a glamorous week in the world's most beautiful urban space - Venice - and earn 3 credits. Study the works of famous foreign writers who have immortalized the city, including Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Henry James, and others, and view well-known sites and works of art through their eyes. From Torcello Island in the lagoon, where Venice had her beginnings, to the Guggenheim area's "gallery row," now popular with modern artists, we'll get to know the city as tourists rarely do. To explore this new and mysterious place, we'll even have our own "literary salon" on Thursday evening with everyone in character as someone from the course. Many students find this to be one of their favorite activities.

Topics include:

  • Venice: People and places
  • The Romantics to the Moderns: Byron, Browning, and Ruskin
  • Torcello: Ruskin, James, Hemingway, and Morris

Instructor:  Dr. Toni Sepeda, PhD, e-mail tosepeda@libero.it

May apply toward credit in English, humanities, Italian studies, or electives.
