The Experience of the First World War
ENGL 288N / 388N, 3 credits
19-26 May 2007Paris and Peronne, France
The most dramatic way to understand WWI is to travel to the front and "read" the voices who recorded the experience of this first world war. We will examine letters, diaries, poetry, and the novel which record the experience of "the Great War." The course will begin in Paris, where we'll discuss the causes, visit war museums and monuments. We will then travel to the western front, studying at the "L'Historial" in Peronne and visiting nearby trenches and the "wastelands" of WWI. The course will end in Paris as we discuss the uneasy conclusions of the war and the impact of WWI on modern society.
