Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in Paris (3 Credits)

This course will introduce you to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, important movements in painting that changed the direction of art. Our focus will be the artists who participated in these movements and their unique contributions. Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, George Seurat, Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin are among the artists whose work we will be studying. The contributions of these artists will be acknowledged and the impact of their contributions on the art of today will be explored.

Requirements
ARTH 199J: Students will complete projects in the museums where we will be working.

They will also keep a journal and take a comprehensive examination on the last day of class. 

ARTH 489J: In addition to lower-level requirements, students will write a term paper. It will be due 4 weeks after the course is completed.

This field study course is applicable for  upper- or lower-level  credit in art history, humanities, or as an elective.

You may register for the three credit field study course with your local field representative or online at MyUMUC (my.umuc.edu). You may apply tuition assistance or financial aid toward tuition costs. Textbook
Students should purchase the textbook at the beginning of the course at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The cost is approximately 20 Euros.
 
Accommodations and Transportation
Accommodation fees will be announced. The fees will cover seven nights in the Hotel Bellevue et du Chariot d'Or with breakfast. All rooms have private baths. There will be a supplement for single rooms. The cost for HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS IS TO BE PAID DIRECTLY TO UMUC.

TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM PARIS IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT.
The class meetings will be held at the HOTEL BELLEVUE where we will be staying.
Museum fees for the week will be announced. A museum pass is available.

UMUC has made reservation at the hotel. It is NOT necessary for you to contact the hotel.  

Final class meeting:  Saturday, 15 January, 0900 in the a.m.

All other classes will be in the museum where we have special permission to meet as a class for lecture and discussion.


Important!
Before completing travel plans, it is the student's responsibility to verify with their field representative or the Field Study Office in Heidelberg that the course will be offered on the dates indicated and/or has materialized. A fee of $100 will be charged to students who cancel from the field study course after the registration deadline.
