Course Description:
| BMGT 364 Management and Organization Theory (3) Prerequisite: BMGT 110 or at least two years of business and management experience. A study of the development of theories about management and organizations. Process and functions of management discussed include the communication process, the role of the manager as an organizer and director, the determination of goals, and the allocation of responsibilities. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: BMGT 364, TEMN 202, TEMN 300, TMGT 301, or TMGT 302. | |
Course Goals/Objectives:
* Describe the four management functions and the type of management activity associated with each. * Identify and explain major developments in the history of management thought. * Define corporate culture and give organizational examples. * Explain the challenges of managing in a global environment. * Define corporate social responsibility and how to evaluate it along economic, legal, ethical and discretionary criteria. * Explain the concept of organizational mission and how it influences goal setting and planning. * Describe the strategic planning process and SWOT analysis. * Identify the steps used in managerial decision making. * Define organizational change and explain forces for change. * Discuss the changing workplace and the management activities required for a culturally diverse workforce. * Define leadership and explain its importance for organizations. * Define motivation and discuss how empowerment heightens employee motivation. * Explain how managers use communication to persuade and influence others. * Explain the general stages of team development. * Define organizational control and explain why it is a key managerial function. | |
Course Introduction:
| The following topics will be explored as they relate to the practical application of management and theory in today's organization: historical foundations of management, managing in a global environment, managerial ethics and corporate social responsibility, strategy formulation and implementation, fundamentals of organizing, change development, managing diverse employees, foundations of behavior in organizations, leadership in organizations, motivation in organizations, communicating in organizations, teamwork in organizations, the importance of control and information technology, and e-business. | |

Project Descriptions:
| You will write three brief critical analyses of assigned case studies from the text. In addition to the written case studies, a 6-8 page research paper on a selected topic concerning management (to be approved by the instructor) is required. Further details regarding the written assignments will be discussed in class. | |
