Course Title:

Michelangelo in Florence

Course Materials:

Course Description:

A study of the works of Michelangelo in Florence. The Florentine works are examined in terms of their impact on the Florentine artistic milieu and their relation to his other works. Assignments include advanced reading and research. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ARTH 199S or ARTH 489S.

Course Goals/Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

* discuss what made Michelangelo such a great artist
* explain the role played by philosophy and religion in his art
* describe the role classical art played upon his style
* differentiate the unifinished from the "unfinishable" in his art.
* recognize the tremendous impact he had upon future artists.

Course Introduction:

Michelangelo "Il Divino" is one of the great artists of all time. Poet, painter, architect and above all, sculptor, he began his career in Florence, the Heart of the Renaissance. Yet many of his most famous works are in Rome. The 2 cities to visit to understand his genius are Florence and Rome.  The class is a combination of in class lecture and in situ lectures, visiting the works by Michelangelo in Rome.
Michelangelo worked in Rome on several different occasions before spending the last years of his life here in exile.   We will look at the role played by his Roman works upon the rest of his career.
Visits will include: Sistine Chapel; St. Peters; Pal. Farnese; St. Peter in Chains;  Capitoline Hill and Sta Maria Maggiore- in brief, all the important works by  Michelangelo. We will also look at how he influenced generations of artist to come.

Grading Information and Criteria:

The final grade is based on the following calculation:

Take Home Essay    85%
participation      15%     15% 

Other Information:

We will be visiting many churches in Rome on Saturday- no shorts or bare shoulders are allowed!

Project Descriptions:

Upper level students will do a research paper 6-8 pages long which must include at least one other source, besides the class text. A list of subjects will be available on the first day of class.

Lower level students will be given an essay to do, from a choice of essay question given to them the first day of class. The class text and notes will be sufficient to do the 4-7 page
essay.

Students must include a bibliography and footnotes.

Course Schedule:

Class meets Friday night from 5-7 in class. Detailed schedule & maps will be given out.
Sat we go to Rome. Travel will be by car or train.
Sun 9-17:00 lecture in class.             

Papers are due June 24.
