Course Title:

Van Gogh: Amsterdam

Course Materials:

Bonafoux, Pascal. The Passionate Eye

Course Description:

A study tour of Amsterdam examining Van Gogh's development through the study of his paintings. Several museums that feature Van Gogh's works are explored.  Changes produced by contacts with Seurat, Gauguin, and Cezanne, as well as the influence of Rembrandt, are highlighted. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ARTH 199N or ARTH 489N

Course Goals/Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

* Identify major styles in painting. For example, Impressionism,Expressionism, Pointillism, Cubism
* Recognize in Van Gogh's work the influenced that shaped his style, for example, Rembrandt, Millet, Impressionism, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat.
* Explain the role that Van Gogh has played in the history of modern art.

Course Introduction:

Vincent Van Gogh: a pioneer in the history of modern art. The significance of the experiments with color, structure and form. Expressionism: Van Gogh's contribution and his influence on the art of today.

Grading Information and Criteria:

All students will complete the following:

Journal = 20% of final grade
Museum Project = 30 % of final grade
Discuss/participation = 20% of final grade
Comprehensive Final = 30% of final grade.

100 - 90 = A
 89 - 80 = B
 79 - 70 = C
 69 - 60 = D
below 60 = F

Project Descriptions:

Journal - hands on/eyes on exercises designed to explore concepts introduced in lectures: expressive color, line, space, fixed vs. multiple points of view, abstract, etc.
Museum Project-This project will focus on the collections where we will be working. The emphasis will be on method and the significance of style.
