Course Title:

Modern French Painting in Nice

Course Materials:

Course Description:

(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.) An art study tour focusing on the evolution of art in the 20th century. Museums housing outstanding collections from this time period will be visited. Original works by Matisse, Miro, Leger, Seurat, Picasso, and many more outstanding artists will be studied. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ARTH 199B or ARTH 488B.

Course Goals/Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • identify major styles in modern art
  • explain why they are important in the history of modern art
  • identify Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art
  • discuss the significance of these experiments from an art historical perspective.

Course Introduction:

Visit to local museums will make it possible for students to observe works by artists who have played and continue to play major roles in the history of modern art. Students will observe the evolution of art from late 19th century to experiments underway today . These visits make it possible to study original works to include Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, etc.

Grading Information and Criteria:

Part 1. Upper and Lower Level requirements.
Participation: discussions, etc. 20% Students are expected to attend all lectures and attend/participate in all museum visits.
Reading Assignments 20%
Journal 20%
Final 40 %
Part 1 will count for 50% of the Upper Level grade

Part 2
Upper Level : a 10 page paper (minimum) will be due four weeks after the completion of the Field Study . 50% of Grade.
Topics will be chosen in Nice.

Other Information:

  • Assignments will be coordinated with material from the text, lectures and museum visits.
  • Discussion groups will follow all lectures and museum visits.
  • We will devote the time necessary to explore important material. Adjustments to our schedule will be made when/if necessary.

Project Descriptions:

Each student will keep a Journal. The Journal projects are designed to compliment the museum visits. The exercises will provide hands on/eyes on opportunities in which the students explore concepts, theories, etc. re: light, color, multiple views, time, etc. in a hands on way.

Overview of Modern Art. Introduction to material and methods,

Session 2.
Modern Art. Why is it different? Impressionism's shift in focus.

Session 3.
Post Impressionism: Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat. What did they contribute? Why is their contribution important?

Session 4.
Picasso: Overview.

Session 5.
Picasso. Multple Views vs Fixed Views. Cubism, Collage . New ways of seeing.

Session 6.
Cubism and it's influence. Matisse, Leger, Miro, etc.
Matisse. Color, Structure/Form. Rythmn as Content.

Session 7.
Matisse Overview. From Impressionism to the carving color.

Session 8.
Sculpture: Miro, Arp, Hepworth, Bury, etc. Space and Time

Session 9.
Summary/Review

Session 10.
Expressionism/Abstract Expression de Stael to Pollock

Session 11.
Pop Art - Found Objects - Overview Picasso/Duchamp, etc.

Session 12.
Art in Action: How we see. Enfolding Perspectives

Session 13.
Journals. What works? What does not work?

Session 14.
