Course Title:

Elementary Albanian II

Course Description:

(Prerequisite: Completion of ALBN111 with a grade of C or better.) The continued basic study of Albanian, emphasizing oral communication and leading to a balanced development of proficiency in the four communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Basic structures, vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing are practiced along with continued familiarity with culture, history, and geography. Oral and written texts by native speakers are used as much as possible.

Course Goals/Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to

  • discuss the countries and cultures in which Albanian is spoken, including their ethnic make-up, religion, and social structure.
  • identify the basic grammatical categories of the Albanian language and be able to benefit from description and correction that use these terms.
  • understand with difficulty sentence-length utterances in face-to-face conversations of basic personal background and needs, social conventions and routine tasks, such as getting meals and receiving simple instructions and directions.
  • ask and answer questions, initiate and respond to simple statements, and maintain face-to-face conversation with difficulty in a limited number of interactive, task-oriented, and social situations such as introducing self, ordering a meal, asking directions, and making purchases.
  • understand main ideas and/or some facts in the simplest messages with social purposes and information for the widest possible audience, such as public announcements and short, straightforward instructions dealing with public life, and basic personal and social needs. Such messages are linguistically noncomplex and have a clear underlying internal structure, for example, chronological sequencing.
  • write short messages, postcards, and take down simple notes, such as telephone messages in recombinations of learned vocabulary and structures into simple sentences on very familiar topics.

Course Introduction:

This course will provide practice using modern Albanian in everyday situations. It will increase the student's knowledge of Albanian grammar as begun in Albanian 111 as well as help the student develop a written and spoken command of this fascinating language.

Grading Information and Criteria:

Midterm examination  20%
(10% demonstration of functional proficiency in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing; 10% grammatical accuracy)

Final examination  30%
(15% demonstration of functional proficiency in the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and  writing; 15% grammatical accuracy)

Participation  35%
(25% activities for development of functional proficiency in Albanian, 10% grammar and vocabulary quizzes)

Workbook and other assignments   15%

Total 100%

The UMUC grading policy is based on the following 100 point scale:
A 90-100 points
B 80-89 points
C 70-79 points
D 60-69 points
F below 60

Other Information:

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Students are expected to
  • attend all class sessions and practice in class. CLASS ATTENDANCE is very important due to the nature of language class. However, if you miss a class session it is your responsibility to go over the material covered during the missed session and to do the relevant exercises.
  • prepare for each class meeting by reading the grammar and the texts in advance. For reinforcement of material covered during the class students should do the exercises home.
  • complete all quizzes. Quizzes are designed to measure grammatical accuracy and comprehension. These quizzes will give you and the instructor an idea how well you have mastered the material covered in a particular chapter and what parts need to be reinforced.
  • successfully pass a midterm exam and a final exam covering Chapters 17 through 34.
