Course Description:
| An introduction to basic vocabulary, simple sentence structures, and tenses of idiomatic Albanian. No prior exposure to Albanian is assumed. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are developed. Focus is on oral communication. Practice in using common speech patterns is provided. Cultural topics are also read and discussed. | |
Course Goals/Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to
- describe the countries and cultures in which Albanian is spoken, including ethnic identity, religion, social structure (social class, roles of women and children), and principal occupations
- know the basic grammatical categories of the language and be able to benefit from description and correction that use these terms
- understand some short, learned utterances with contextual support and comprehend some words and phrases from slowed, simple questions, statements, high-frequency commands and courtesy formulae about basic personal information or the immediate physical setting with long pauses and repetition
- speak isolated words and learned phrases with vocabulary for handling simple, elementary needs and expressing basic courtesies
- copy or transcribe familiar words or phrases and reproduce some from memory.

Course Introduction:
| Introductory Albanian is the beginning study of the basic grammatical structures of the language. Whenever possible, information about Albanian culture, such as traditions, geography, history, and politics, will be incorporated into the course. The emphasis in this class will be on oral proficiency as well as the following skills: listening, writing, and reading. | |

Other Information:
Students are expected to
- attend all class sessions and practice in class. CLASS ATTENDANCE is very important due to the nature of language class. However, if you miss a class session it is your responsibility to go over the material covered during the missed session and to do the relevant exercises.
- prepare for each class meeting by reading the grammar and the texts in advance. For reinforcement of material covered during the class students should do the exercises home.
- complete all quizzes. Quizzes are designed to measure grammatical accuracy and comprehension. These quizzes will give you and the instructor an idea how well you have mastered the material covered in a particular chapter and what parts need to be reinforced.
- successfully pass a midterm exam and a final exam covering Chapters 1 through 17.
