Accounting Software

Note: This course requires that you have a PC with Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating system which allows you to install the accounting software program that is included with the textbook. The software for this course will not install on a computer that has the Windows Vista operating system. 

Course Description:

Prerequisite: ACCT 221. An introduction to accounting software, focusing on evaluation of the benefits, costs, and risks of specific programs. Topics include payroll, inventory, accounts payable, accounts receivable, job cost, and point-of-sale applications. Popular software packages in the areas of tax and financial statement preparation are introduced. Projects and assignments integrate the principles of accounting information systems with the evaluation of accounting software. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ACCT 328 or ACCT 398A

Course Goals/Objectives:

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • explain the role of information technology in today's accounting and tax practices and financial management systems
  • use general types of accounting software applications and programs apply the functions and uses of spreadsheets in financial and/or tax-based operations
  • examine the operation of database programs with their use in accounting and tax environments
  • use miscellaneous software applications in accounting and tax practices (for example, graphics/presentation and project management software, communications applications, and computer-based research tools) gain hands-on experience using accounting and tax software packages
  • assess the impact of e-commerce and e-business in the use of accounting software
  • assess issues associated with evaluating, selecting, customizing, installing, and running an accounting software package

Course Introduction:

Accountants rely heavily on computer-based systems to perform their jobs. Having a practical understanding of accounting software is crucial in today's world of information technology. This course gives the student hands-on experience in using one of the most widely used accounting software packages for small to medium sized businesses. Topics covered in this course include: installing accounting software, journal transactions for a service-based business, payroll, report preparation, journal transactions for a merchandising business, and end-of-period activities.

Grading Information and Criteria:

Grades in this course will be determined as follows:

Weekly Quizzes = 30 %

Participation = 10%

Midterm Exam = 30%

Final Exam = 30%

The grading scale in this course will be determined as follows:

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = below 60%

Instructor may wish to add faculty policies on late assignments, attendance, and extra credit.

Project Descriptions:

Students will be working on various projects throughout the chapters covered in the textbook. Additionally, there will be two projects that will be used as the basis for the examinations. The first project is working with the accounting records of a service-based business. The second project is working with the accounting records of a merchandising business. Further details on these projects will be provided in class.
