All graduate students should be prepared to utilize the UMUC online library at http://www.umuc.edu/library/.  The library contains a large number of full text academic journals that are free of charge and immediately available.  The library homepage also contains a number of links related to improving students' research and writing skills.

Recommended Journals:

Publications of the various professional societies (such as ACM -- the Association for Computing Machinery, the IEEE Computing Society, and the various management professional societies) are strongly recommended. In addition, there are many trade journals (such as eWEEK) that MIS professionals should become familiar with, many of these being published both weekly and on-line.

Course Description:

An introduction to security concepts needed for the design, use, and implementation of secure voice and data communications networks, including the Internet. An overview of networking technology and standards is provided, including an introduction to the Internet communications protocols. Specific security subjects addressed include firewalls, packet filtering, virtual private networks (VPNs), wireless network security, and operating system security.

Course Goals:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should understand and be able to apply knowledge concerning:
  1. External and internal factors threatening networks.
  2. Industry standards for network security.
  3. Tools and methodologies supporting network security.
  4. Current and emerging issues and trends in network security.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion , the student should be able to:
  1. Illustrate and explain fundamental architectures of networks and the Internet as well as their underlying protocols.
  2. Identify and define security issues, problems and vulnerabilities in voice, data, and wireless networks.
  3. Define, evaluate, and compare prevalent information assurance solutions for voice, data, and wireless networks.
  4. Describe and analyze Internet security issues and available countermeasures.
  5. Apply industry standard security concepts and techniques to specific network environments.
  6. Evaluate trends in network security policies and technology as well as their impact on the future of network developmen

Grading Information:

Final grades will be calculated as follows:

Midterm examination: 15%
Final examination: 15%
Research Paper: 20%
Assignments: 20%
Participation: 30%


According to the Graduate School grading policy, the following symbols and scale are used:

A = excellent (90-100)
B = good (80-89)
C = passing (70-79)
F = failure (less than 70)

The grade of "B" represents the benchmark for the Graduate School. It indicates the student has demonstrated competency in the subject matter of the course, i.e., has fulfilled all course requirements on time, has a clear grasp of the full range of course materials and concepts, and is able to present and apply these materials and concepts in clear, reasoned, well-organized and grammatically correct responses, whether written or oral.

Only students who full meet this standard and, in addition, who demonstrate exceptional comprehension and application of the course subject matter, merit an "A."

Students who do not meet the benchmark standard of competency fall within the "C" range or lower. They, in effect, have not met graduate level standards. Where this failure is substantial, they earn an "F."

Course Requirements:

Participation in Conference and CyberCafe discussions: The WebTycho enivronment provides a Conference area for weekly discussions on course material and a CyberCafe for more general discussions. You are expected to engage in all discussions in a professional and informed manner. Usually this requires two to three hours for every hour of a face-to-face class and approximately ten hours of preparation per week for a DE class. From time-to-time, questions will be asked by the instructor and/or by students for which you will be told to search out an answer (using the Web, library, or other sources) and share the information found with the rest of the class.

Assignments and Exams: The WebTycho Syllabus will provide more specific instructions about assignments and exams, as well as any other requirements.

Term Paper Length and Style: You are required to prepare a term paper of about 12-15 double-spaced pages. Use Times New Roman 12pt font and prepare in MS Office Word. Use at least eight references from any published source, including the Internet. Refer to UMUC Web site Library Resource link for possible sources. Choose a relevant topic of interest or usefulness to your career. The purpose of the paper is to give you an opportunity to demonstrate not only that you understand the material you are reading, but also that you can apply the concepts. The paper will account for 20% of your semester grade. Resubmission of course work from previous classes is not acceptable in this course and will result in an automatic failure on the assignment.

Term Paper Process: Students are required to use the structured approach to project construction to aid them in completing a successful paper. Students must turn in several interim products (deliverables) which are part of the term paper grade.
Module 3: Student proposes research paper topic for approval.
Module 9: First section of the paper with list of sources.
Module 13: Final version of the paper.

Paper Evaluation Criteria and Feedback: The litmus test of a good research project is: "Does my research project provide the professor with new insight on my topic?" An e-mail evaluation of the paper will be provided along with the final grade.

Standards for Papers: (Repeated from the UMUC Policies Entry.) Effective managers and leaders are also effective communicators. Written communication is an important element of the total communication process. The Graduate School recognizes and expects exemplary writing to be the norm for course work. All individual and group papers must demonstrate graduate level writing ability and comply with the format requirements of the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). Careful attention should be given to source citations, proper listing of references, and the presentation of tables and graphs. Format and graphics, however, are not always transmitted well over the Internet: there are dozens of ways in which hardware, software and networks may be incompatible. A student may mail an additional copy of his/ her research paper to the professor by Postal Service when graphics present a problem. E. Policy and Academic Integrity (Plagiarism): (Repeated from the UMUC Policies Entry.) Plagiarism is the intentional or unintentional presentation of another person's idea or product as one's own. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to the following: copying verbatim all or part of another's written work; using phrases, charts, figures, illustrations, or mathematical or scientific solutions without citing the source; and paraphrasing ideas, conclusions, or research without citing the source. Students can avoid unintentional plagiarism by carefully accepted scholarly practices. Notes taken for papers and research projects should accurately record sources of material to be cited, quoted, paraphrased, or summarized, and papers should acknowledge these sources in footnotes. The penalties on plagiarism include a zero or a grade "F" on the work in question, a grade "F" in the course, suspension with a file letter, suspension with a transcript notation, or expulsion.

Description of Course Requirements:

Successful graduate students in American universities dedicate approximately three hours of preparation/study time for every hour spent in the face-to-face classroom. Thus, the following course requirements were developed on the assumption that students would be prepared to spend approximately 150 hours of their own time working on them. In an 8-week term, that is the equivalent of a half-time job. Most graduate distance education courses require at least 10 hours per week of dedicated time, plus time spent in the virtual classroom.

STATEMENT ON WRITING REQUIREMENTS:

The Graduate School recognizes and expects exemplary writing to be the norm for course work. To this end, all analyses and papers must demonstrate graduate level writing ability and comply with the format requirements of the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association. All writing assignments will be graded on the basis of content, logic, analysis, mechanics, organization, and research. Careful attention should be given to source citations, proper listing of references, the use of footnotes, and the presentation of tables and graphs. Work submitted online should follow standard procedures for formatting and citation.

POLICY ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
Academic integrity is central to the learning and teaching process. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that will contribute to the maintenance of academic integrity by making all reasonable efforts to prevent the occurrence of academic dishonesty. Academic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to) obtaining or giving aid on an examination, having unauthorized prior knowledge of an examination, doing work for another student, and plagiarism of all types.

Resubmission of course work from previous classes (whether or not taken at UMUC, UMUC-Europe or BSU), partially or in its entirety, is not acceptable in this course and will result in an automatic failure on the assignment.

Faculty Bio:

Dr. Rodgers earned the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech and the Ph.D. in Business Administration at Georgia State University. Post-Doctoral work in international business and economics/international relations led to the award of the M.S. degree in international relations through a cooperative program between the University of the Saarlands, Germany and TSU/European Division. He was the first graduate of an innovative software engineering graduate program offered by TSU in cooperation with the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, in which he earned the M.S. degree in computer information systems. He has served as a professor at the University of West Florida, Georgia State University, the University of Toledo, and Troy State University/European Division. He has presented lectures at the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China, the Human Resources Center in Shenzhen, China, the School of Management of Xi'an University in Xi'an, China, the Mikkeli Polytechnic Institute in Mikkeli, Finland, and taught the UWF Summer in Japan Program in Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo, Japan.
Dr. Rodgers has published articles and made presentations at a variety of professional meetings in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia in the fields of management, operations research and computer science. His practical experience includes positions in operations research and systems engineering with the IBM, Armor and Milliken corporations. He has also served as a consultant and an expert witness in the fields of systems and operations research. He has been active in professional organizations such as ACM, TIMS, ORSA and DSI. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Iota Delta honor societies and earned the CDP and CSP certifications from the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals.
