Robert-Louis Abrahamson and Brunhilde Künne receive 2008-2009 Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence Awards

During the 2009 commencement ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany, UMUC President Dr. Susan Aldridge awarded Robert-Louis Abrahamson and Brunhilde Künne each the Stanley J. Drazek Award for Teaching Excellence. Each year, these awards are bestowed on faculty members who have been nominated by their students and chosen by their peers for their distinguished teaching.

David Starr-Glass Wins Provost's Award for Best Paper in Online Education Research

For his paper entitled "Instructor Authenticity in Mediating a Sense of Online Community," David Starr-Glass, a UMUC Europe DE adjunct associate professor who resides in Jerusalem, is the recipient of the inaugural Provost's Award for Best Paper in Online Education Research.

The competition was established to encourage excellence in online education and new scholarship and research among UMUC faculty. A committee chaired by Erran Carmel, Orkand Chair in Management and Technology, reviewed submitted papers.

David will be recognized with a $500 honorarium, featured on the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Web page, and invited to the Academic Achievement dinner.

In addition to his interest in online education, David teaches business and management courses with UMUC and is also a mentor with the Center for International Programs, Prague Unit, Empire State College, State University of New York. David received his MBA from Notre Dame de Namur University, his MSc in organizational psychology from University of London, and his MEd in online pedagogy from University of Southern Queensland.

Tobe Levin Wins Prestigious USM Board of Regents' Faculty Award

UMUC is pleased to announce that Tobe Levin, UMUC Europe collegiate professor, was named recipient of the prestigious 2009 University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents' Faculty Award, the highest honor bestowed by the USM Board to recognize exemplary faculty achievement.

Competing amongst other faculty from all USM institutions, this award recognizes distinguished faculty who display excellence in the areas of teaching; research, scholarship, and creative activity; mentoring; public service; and collaboration. For her outstanding professional accomplishments, Dr. Levin received the award for the category of research, scholarship, and creative activity. In addition to her research and numerous publications on female genital mutilation in Africa, the Holocaust, and feminist literary criticism, Dr. Levin is the editor of two recent pioneering publications: Empathy and Rage: Female Genital Mutilation in African Literature and Violence: Mercurial Gestalt.

Established in 1995, the Board of Regents annually presents up to 15 awards in five categories to exceptional faculty. Candidates for the awards are reviewed and selected by the Council of University System Faculty and approved by the board.
