Course Description   

This course examines database concepts and practices as they relate to business environments. Various database structures, including relational and object-oriented are discussed. Concepts of distributed database architecture are explored. Design, development and implementation of databases are examined. Organizational issues concerning the implementation of databases are also examined. The role of data in the decision-making process is examined. Decision support system architecture is reviewed with an emphasis on the database component. Issues of intelligent databases are discussed. A database project is required.

 

Course Description

      At the conclusion of this course, the student will demonstrate :

            1. An understanding of the terminology of database technology;

2. An ability to normalize database tables and an understanding of its importance;

3. An ability to write accurate SQL statements;

4. A facility with data modeling;

5. An appreciation of modern trends in database usage including intelligent databases, object-oriented databases and distributed databases;

6. An understanding of how databases are used in the World Wide Web.

 

Grading         

      Grades for this course will be assigned as follows.

            A    92%+

            B    80 - 91%

            C    70 - 79%

            F     Below 70% or regular non-attendance

The Project    

 Students will work on an individual project to develop an application from user requirements through data modeling to implementation and testing. The project details will be distributed in the first class session when details of its scope and the grading of it will also be discussed.
