Course
Goals and Purpose: This Course will guide students to examine/evaluate the key
elements of chemical dependency (CD) counseling, including: the addictive
process; mechanisms of psychoactive drugs; major psychoactive drug categories,
and the drugs’ physical and psychological effects; assessment of substance abuse
and chemical dependence; the major modes of CD treatment – psychoanalytic,
behavioral, 12-step, cognitive, REBT/SMART, client-centered, holistic, harm
reduction, family, community, & Eriksonian; and research – on effectiveness
of CD treatment. Most important – to
seek out and understand those issues and concepts which are most important to
YOU!
Course
Objectives. The objectives of this
course are for students to gain and demonstrate an understanding of theoretical knowledge of major CD
concepts and use of practical applications, including:
1. theories and mechanisms of addiction
2. psychoactive actions of drugs and alcohol
3. methods of CD assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planing
4. the various modes of treatment and their effectiveness
5. the resources and methods available for CD research
EVALUATION
- Grades will be given based on mastery of course objectives, class (WebTycho) participation, weekly written
assignments, and one theoretical/ research paper.
Mastery of
objectives will be tested by a “Take Home” Final Examination, during the week
of March 2nd - 7th. The Final will be
worth 20 points, and will consist of essay questions.
Because we are
working on the internet (WebTycho), class participation is significant!! You are expected to read the required
readings by the beginning of the appropriate week, then must log onto WebTycho,
submit work and comments, and respond to others - weekly (except during
Holiday/Christmas/New Years break)!
Participation is worth 20 points.
Projects and WebTycho
Assignments - There will be assignments to be posted, each week (except 12/22 -
1/17). These assignments are listed in
the week by week assignments section.
“Due date” means midnight, on the due date, in your time zone. Projects will include a case study, and a
+12-Step Project.” For the case study,
a case scenario “Ed” will be presented, in late November. From this case study, each student will
submit a report, 2 pages in length, and will include: the name of the client,
background information, precipitating event, symptoms, 5 Axis diagnosis,
reasons for choosing the diagnosis, and tentative ideas for further assessment
and treatment. The Case Study Report
will be due on January 25th.
The Case “Ed” will follow into the Treatment Modes section of this
course.
The
“12-Step Project” (in February) involves doing ONE of three options:
Option
1 – Write a TWO page paper on “How Alcoholics Anonymous works”; OR
Option
2 – Write a TWO page paper on “How effective is Alcoholics Anonymous, as a
treatment option”; OR
Option
3 – Attend ONE “Open” Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)(or other 12-Step)
meeting, and write a TWO page paper on YOUR experience and views, of attending
that AA/12-Step meeting.
You will be
further reminded, AND can ask questions about, upcoming weekly assignments,
week by week. Please do not be tardy
with work. WebTycho assignments count
for 40 points.
There
is ONE written project, a 10-12 page (“double spaced”) research project - a
paper on ANY topic that relates to counseling chemical dependence. The Written Project is DUE on February 7, 2003; and is worth 20 points.
Here are a few basics to consider when
composing your paper: Clearly state, in the introduction, just what it is that
you intend to accomplish. Illustrate
your beliefs and points with evidence - theoretical and personal. If you are speaking about yourself, use
evidence from your experience to document your position. If you are making theoretical points, cite
the textual passage, research, or theory that supports your argument. Summarize, at the end of your paper. Because effective writing is a critical part
of your education, essay work should be clear and concise, with proper grammar
and spelling. Your paper should also be
in proper APA format and properly referenced.
Important note - for WebTycho assignments and
for written projects - you should include, in your work and research,
researching Web Sites. Some relevant
Web Sites will be posted within our WebTycho class.
GRADES AND GRADING: Students who wish to excel
in this course must give evidence of critical thinking, and demonstrate an
ability to thoughtfully compose and carry out the written assignments. Students should interact with their fellow
students (and ME!) in WebTycho Topic Areas.
Diversity of opinion is encouraged; it will serve our learning if we
respect each other, and the values and opinions of each of us. If we cultivate an atmosphere in which we
can challenge ourselves and each other, supportively, we will all learn and
grow!

may be addressed.
CONFIDENTIALITY
- Because self-analysis is so important to promote understanding ourselves, and
therefore important to counseling, each of you will be introspecting and
analyzing yourselves. This is a course
that will involve some self-examination and degrees of sharing personal
information with the class. Therefore, students must be sensitive to the right
to privacy of other students. It is
important to be discrete and appropriate in your personal sharing in our
“classroom”; therefore
be VERY mindful of what personal information you post onto WebTycho (which goes
to each of us, and to no one else). It
is important to self-disclose about yourself; BUT ALSO, to be very mindful of
what you share in class and NOT to share those personal things that you might
regret sharing, at some later time.
Further, you must be sensitive to the privacy of your fellow students,
and that all information shared REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL! During the first week of class, you MUST go to the Topic Area
titled “Self-Disclosure and Confidentiality” and AGREE TO the terms of
self-disclosure and confidentiality in this course.
In addition to formal course requirements, personal journaling is strongly encouraged.

FINAL EXAM***
A personal note from Dr. Calvin: Welcome to
each of you!! In these difficult times,
I must emphasize the importance of counseling and of supporting each
other. I look forward to working with
each of you in this challenging course.
There is a great deal of material to learn and digest. Please read the
textbook assignments, by the beginning of each week. You will find that the first weeks go very quickly, and they can
easily be overwhelming because of the amount of material. All the textbooks (especially I & C) are
easy to read and interesting. So, GOOD
READING!!!!!
President Bush Senior used to say, “Read my
lips!”; here is MY “read my lips”: I am here to help you, support you, and
encourage you - to do your own personal growth - in knowledge, counseling
theory, and personally. Do NOT be
bashful about asking for feedback, advice, and counseling; this is “WHY I AM
HERE”!!!
SEE YOU “IN CLASS”!!
QUESTIONS???
- about the Syllabus, or anything: ASK!!!!
