Course Goals and
Purpose. This course is designed to
provide an overview of the major personality theories, including psychodynamic
and neopsychoanalytic, life-span, trait, humanistic, cognitive, behavioral,
social learning, and limited-domain. We
study the causes and nature of personality deviation and psychological
disorders. Through the study of DSM-IV,
we will examine the symptomatology associated with the major psychiatric
disorders, and analyze the possible theoretical exaplnations of symptoms. We study the relationship between
personality theories and psychotherapeutic interventions, with a brief
introduction to psychopharmacology.
Course
Objectives. The objectives of this
course are for students to gain and demonstrate an understanding of:
1. Major Personality
Theories
2. Ways of
researching and studying personality
3. Child, adolescent
and adult disorders
4. How the various
theories help us understand etiology of disorders
5. The basis of
effective and ineffective coping skills and social support
6. How theoretical
understanding helps formulate counseling interventions
Evaluation. Grades will be given based on mastery of
course objectives, class (WebTycho) participation, weekly written assignments,
and one research/theoretical paper.
Mastery of
objectives will be tested by a “Take Home” Final Examination,
during the week of March 2nd - 7th. The
Final will be worth 20 points, and will consist of essay questions.
Because we are
working on the internet (WebTycho), class participation is significant!! You are expected to read the required
readings by the beginning of the appropriate week, then must log onto WebTycho,
submit work and comments, and respond to others - weekly (except during
Holiday/Christmas/New Years break)!
Participation is worth 20 points.
WebTycho assignments
- There will be assignments to be posted, each week (except 12/22 - 1/17). These assignments are listed in the week by
week assignments section, below. “Due
date” means midnight, on the due date, in your time zone. WebTycho assignments will include a case
study. For the case study, each student
will submit a report, 2-3 pages in length, and will include: the name of the
client, background information, precipitating event, symptoms, 5 Axis
diagnosis, reasons for choosing the diagnosis, theoretical explanation of that
disorder, and tentative ideas for further assessment and treatment. You will be further reminded, AND can ask
questions about, upcoming weekly assignments, week by week. Please do not be tardy with work. WebTycho assignments count for 40 points.
Important note - for
WebTycho assignments and for written projects - you should include, in your
work and research, researching Web Sites.
Some relevant Web Sites will be posted within our WebTycho class.
There is ONE written
project, 7 - 10 pages (“double spaced”): A paper on “Your Theoretical Approach.” The paper should be a
summation, based on your understanding of the various theoretical approaches
and your life experiences, of which theory best “fits” your personality as a
prospective counselor. The paper should
include: Which theory do you identify with and why?; What (for YOU) are this
theory’s strengths?; What are this theory’s weaknesses?; What do you consider
adaptive behavior?; What would the goals in a counseling relationship be?; and,
any personal reasons for identifying with this theory. The Written Project is
DUE on February 1, 2003; and is worth 20 points.
Here are a few
basics to consider when composing your paper: Clearly state, in the
introduction, just what it is that you intend to accomplish. Illustrate your beliefs and points with
evidence B theoretical and personal. If you are speaking about yourself, use
evidence from your experience to document your position. If you are making theoretical points, cite
the textual passage, research, or theory that supports your argument. Summarize, at the end of your paper. Because effective writing is a critical part
of your education, essay work should be clear and concise, with proper grammar
and spelling. Your paper should also be
in proper APA format and properly referenced.
GRADES AND GRADING:
Students who wish to excel in this course must give evidence of critical
thinking, and demonstrate an ability to thoughtfully compose and carry out the
written assignments. Students should
interact with their fellow students (and ME!) in WebTycho Topic Areas. Diversity of opinion is encouraged; it will
serve our learning if we respect each other, and the values and opinions of
each of us. If we cultivate an
atmosphere in which we can challenge ourselves and each other, supportively, we
will all learn and grow!

CONFIDENTIALITY -
Because self-analysis is so important to promote understanding ourselves, and
therefore important to counseling, each of you will be introspecting and
analyzing yourselves. This is a course
that will involve some self-examination and degrees of sharing personal
information with the class. Therefore, students must be sensitive to the right
to privacy of other students. It is
important to be discrete and appropriate in your personal sharing in our
“classroom”; therefore be VERY mindful of what personal
information you post onto WebTycho (which goes to each of us, anENTIAL! During the first week of class, you MUST go to the Topic Area
titled “Self-Disclosure and Confidentiality” and AGREE TO the terms of
self-disclosure and confidentiality in this course.

****”Take Home” FINAL EXAM***
A personal note from
Dr. Calvin: Welcome to each of you!! In
these difficult times, I must emphasize the importance of counseling and of
supporting each other. I look forward
to working with each of you in this challenging course. There is a great deal of material to learn
and digest. Please read the Schultz & Schultz text, and later the DSM-IV
reading, by the beginning of each week.
You will find that the first weeks go very quickly, and they can easily
be overwhelming because of the amount of material. The books (Schultz & Schultz and DSM-IV) are easy to read and
interesting. So, GOOD READING!!!!!
President Bush
Senior used to say, “Read my lips!”; here is MY “read my lips”: I am here to
help you, support you, and encourage you - to do your own
personal growth - in knowledge, counseling theory, and personally. Do NOT be bashful about asking for feedback,
advice, and counseling; this is “WHY I AM HERE”!!!
SEE YOU “IN CLASS”!!
QUESTIONS??? - about the Syllabus, or anything: ASK!!!!
