MGMT 571: Human Resource Management

Textbook:    Gomez-Mejia, Balkin & Cardy, Managing Human Resources, 3rd edition.

                     Kauffman & Massey, Human Capital Applications using Microsoft Office 2000, 1st edn.

                   

Course Description: A 3 semester hour graduate course that addresses the role of the human resource function (HR) in the organization from a general management perspective.  The course will examine the entire realm of the HR functions, from personnel entry to separation, emphasizing how the organization develops and implements policies affecting the treatment of its employees and the subsequent impact (internal and external) on the organization and the decision-making process.

 

Course Objectives: Upon course completion, the student is expected to:        

  1. Understand the role and process of HR within the organization.
  2. Conduct comprehensive case analysis to support defensive positions on resolution of personnel problems.
  3. Understand the strategic importance HR has on the corporation and its impact on the decision-making process.
  4. Relate to and identify the contemporary HR issues facing the corporation with sufficient in-depth knowledge to address, from a managerial viewpoint, current HR issues.

 

Evaluation:  The final grade will be based on the following criteria:

            1.  Final Examination (3 hours)                    35%

            2.  Mid-Term Examination (2.5 hours)        35%

            3.  Case Analysis/Class Participation        15%

            4.  Term Paper*                                            15%

                   

*Each student is to research a specific HR management issue and submit a term paper (limited to 10 pages) by weekend #3. The paper and citation format are to adhere to the APA Publication Manual, 5th edition.

 

Class Policies per University/Federal Requirements:     

  1. Grading: A=90-100 points; B=80-89 points; C=70-79 points; F=<60 points.
  2. Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance is expected. If a class is missed, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain the material covered and the upcoming assignments.  After (3) three unexcused absences, the ESO will be notified. Work and duty obligations are the exception.
  3. Make-up Examinations: It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentary  proof  in order to take a quiz/exam that was missed for job or illness reasons.            
  4.  Plagiarism: Plagiarized documents submitted for course requirements/grading will receive a grade of zero (0), whether copied in whole or in part.  See the European Division Catalog for UMUC policy on academic dishonesty and plagiarism.
  5. Student preparation for each class session is a requirement.                             

 

Class Procedures:   

  1. The classroom approach for the course will be lectures with open discussions and case analyses (oral and written).
  2. All written exercises will be graded according to content, degree of analysis, grammar, spelling, clarity, etc.  Documents not meeting these criteria will result in a grade reduction based on the degree of severity.
  3. All written requirements are to be submitted on the set date: 10% penalty for lateness.
  4. Students are to have read/prepared assignments for each session.
