Course Description: Organizational behavior
(OB) is a field of study that focuses on what people do in an organization and
how that behavior affects the performance of the organization. The course will focus on three determinants
of behavior in organizations: individuals, groups, and the effect of
organizational structure and systems on behavior. Students will become
acquainted with the major conceptual models that purport to explain
organizational behavior, acquire an understanding of the methods used to study
organizations, and analyze some of the classic literature in the field.
Topics
covered will include
- Values, attitudes, and
job satisfaction
- Group behavior and
process
- Managers and
organizational behavior
- Organizational
communication
- Leadership, power and
politics
- Conflict and
negotiation
- Organizational culture
- Organizational
development and change
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Describe the principle
theories of behavior in organizations.
- Describe the
relationship between individual and group behavior and effective organizational performance.
- Discuss the various
managerial issues related to OB and organizational change.
- Analyze the change
management process in complex organizations undergoing change.
- Express a working
philosophy of organizational behavior that will enable the student to
manage and lead more effectively.
Course
Policies and Procedures:
Attendance: Students are expected to attend each class session. If you should miss a class session, you will
be held responsible for the information covered. It is also your responsibility
to obtain the material covered and information concerning upcoming assignments.
Academic
Dishonesty and Plagiarism: Students are expected to
maintain high standards of honesty and ethical behavior. All assignments
submitted in fulfillment of course requirements must be the student’s own work.
Assignments, except those designated as “team projects,” are meant to be
individual efforts. Team efforts are meant to be equal efforts of all team
members. See the European Division catalog for UMUC policy on academic
dishonesty and plagiarism.
Conduct: Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that
provides an environment conducive to learning for all students. Talking in
class, arriving late to class, leaving class early, monopolizing class
discussion, and disruptive behavior of any type will not be tolerated.
Article Search Assignment
Students will be asked to search for, select, and critically evaluate an article relevant to the field of Organization Behavior from one of the following journals, accessed via UMUC’s online library: Human Resource Management Review, Human Resource Development Quarterly, Personnel Psychology, Public Personnel Management, Organization Studies, Organizational Dynamics, Human Organization, or the Organization Development Journal. Further information about the article search assignment will be provided in class.
Mid-term and Final Exam: These exams will be given in class. They are not open book exams. They will consist primarily of conceptual/theoretical and essay questions designed to demonstrate your ability to apply OB theory, research, and principles to real organizational problems. The exams should serve as good preparation for the comprehensive examinations, which you will be required to take in order to fulfill the requirements of the graduate program.
Team
Assignment: Students will form into 3-person teams to
produce two deliverables: a written paper and a formal presentation. The objective of this assignment is to identify
real world examples of “best practices” in the field of organization
development. Teams will be asked to
identify a real organization that has recently undergone significant,
transformational change. In the paper, students will analyze the change process
that occurred and discuss it in light of OB concepts covered in the course. On
the final day of class, teams will make a formal presentation of their “planned
change project” to the rest of the class. More information about the team
assignment will be provided in class.
