Course Description:
The nature of the modern workforce demands greater and greater attention to the details of personnel mangement. Organizations are finding that product and market strategies alone are not sufficient to meet organizational goals. The ability to attract and maintain qualified, motivated workers is a task of increasing importantce. This course will deal with the main issues in personnel management confronting organizations now, and in the years to come.
Course Objectives:
In this course we will examine the following:
1. The Strategic Design of modern personnel systems.
2. The problems of personnel acquisition and placement.
3. The process and methodologies of Job Analysis.
4. Analysis of Modern performenace appraisal systems.
5. The Legal environment of Human Relations.
6. Unions and collective bargaining.
Course Policies:
There will be a mid-term and a final exam. The mid-term will fall on the Sunday afternoon of the second weekend, while the final exam will fall on the Sunday of weekend four. The mid-term will consist of all readings and lectures to date, while the final exam will be comprehensive. Each exam will constitute one-third of your total grade. The final third will be determined by your theme paper.
Every student will be required to submit a theme paper examining in detail a current trend or challenge in Human Resource Mangement. By weekwnd two , I expect each student to present a topic sheet to me which contains three elements:
1. The chosen topic.
2. The topic approach.
3. A sample of the literature to be used.
In adition, each student will be required to do a class presentation of his/her topic on the Saturday of
weekend four. This presentation will be worth 20% of the paper's overall grade. Any paper not turned in by
the day of the final exam will receice an automatic reduction in value by 20% - No Exceptions.

Grading Scale:
90 - 100 = A
89 - 80 = B
70 - 79 = C
Below 70 = F
Reading Assignments: A schedule will be provided at the first class. Students should be reading the first several chapters of each text in preparation for the first class session.
