Course Description and Purpose: EDCP 888 Apprenticeship in Counseling is designed to extend the student's initial supervised field placement at an approved practicum/internship site.  The course serves two related functions: it addresses the need for ongoing group supervision during apprenticeship and provides additional instruction on counseling skill acquisition and ethics to enhance practicum learning outcomes.  EDCP 888 is a required course for the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling and Personnel Services; together, EDCP 619 and 888 complete the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) specified sequence for Clinical Instruction.

Apprenticeship Topics will include: 1) Improved self awareness, knowledge and practical skills; 2) Importance of individual and group supervision; 3) Communication skills with clients, supervisors, co-workers, and peers; 4) Counseling with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities; 5) Cultural competency and diversity issues in counseling; 6) Ethical and legal issues in practice; and 7) Personal transformation and empowerment during Apprenticeship.

Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are for students to:

1.    Keep a log of work experience regarding clinical practice. Include summaries of significant interactions, interventions, etc., observed/participated in (role playing, sculpting, history taking);

2.    Read assignments of clinical material. The instructor will suggest various articles, books, etc.;

3.    Arrange a convenient time for the Apprenticeship instructor to meet with respective site supervisors for the purpose of discussing the progress, issues, content, and format of the supervision;

4.    Plan to meet with the Apprenticeship instructor at the designated time mutually agreed upon to jointly evaluate progress in the Internship;

5.    Submit all assigned Exercises from texts.

Class Sessions - A portion of each class will be devoted to instructional aspects drawing on relevant topics presented in the required texts. However, emphasis will be placed on the group supervision function to include case presentations by students, review of tape and verbatim transcripts, attention to the group dynamics, teamwork, resolution of interpersonal issues as well as concerns with site supervisors, colleagues, etc. Generally, the weekly class sessions are designed to be experiential in nature.

Evaluation - Grades will be assigned based on passing/mastery of every element of Apprenticeship - participation, written exercises, Web Board assignments, evaluation of counseling tapes, and site supervisor evaluation.

Attendance and class participation are significant!  If you miss class, or are tardy on Web Board assignments, you are responsible for making up all work.  Class participation will account for 30% of your grade.

Some written assignments will be done in class; most will be done on your own and brought in to class.  Written assignments will account for 30% of your grade.  Because effective writing is a critical part of your education, appropriate written work should be clear and concise, with proper grammar/ spelling, and in proper “APA” format.  Dr. Calvin will KEEP all Exercises/ Assignments turned in; so please make copies – one for yourself, one to turn in.

Our Web Board will be used to post assignments, to post selected assignments, and to provide communications and feedback to all!

Evaluation of Therapy TapesSubmit two audio-recorded sessions with client for review and comments.  Due dates: February 24, 2002, and March 31, 2002.  Each student will select two transcribed excerpts (approximately 10 minutes) from your recorded sessions and present them to the class for discussion and critique (Please be sure the tape is audible); this will account for 20% of your grade.

Site Supervisor Evaluation – Evaluation by your Apprenticeship site supervisor will account for 20% of your grade.

            Summary:

            Participation                 30%

            Written Assignments           30%

            Evaluation of Therapy Tapes   20%

            Site Supervisor Evaluation    20%

Grades will be assigned as follows: 90-100 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C

Students seeking accommodation for special needs are requested to discuss their situation with the Instructor well in advance, so that reasonable accommodation may be addressed.

CONFIDENTIALITY: The right to privacy of each client requires that all case material, including audio/video taping and notes etc. obtained during the counseling sessions, be kept confidential and anonymous.
