HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Monday & Wednesday - 1845 - 2130

 Course Description: An analysis of problems, issues, and opportunities in managing the procurement, development, utilization, and maintenance of an effective, productive, and satisfied workforce.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

1. Define human resource strategy,

2. Distinguish the strategic approach to human resource management,

3. Understand human resource management and information systems,

4. Discuss strategic management,

5. Explain external and global environments,

6. Discuss equal employment opportunity,

7. Discuss job analysis and employee recruitment,

8. Define socialization,

9. Discuss the process of performance appraisals and compensation,

10. Understand the concept of productivity, explain benefit planning,

11. Be familiar with managerial ethics, and

12. Identify strategic issues affecting labor unions.

Basic Text:

Anthony, W.P., P. L. Perrewé, and K. M. Kacmar, Human Resources Management: A Strategic Approach (3rd Ed.), Orlando, FL: Harcourt Brace, 1999

Requirements:

Mastery of concepts emphasized in required readings and class discussions will be accomplished and demonstrated through:

  1. Two examinations, these will be essay and quantitative in form, and there will be some choice in which questions to answer.
  1. Two written papers on human resources management.
  1. Case Study (Team Project)
  1. Active participation in the class discussions.

Case Study:

Teamwork is essential to the case study. Teams of up to 4 students will be formed with follow students in class. The use of the Internet as a communication and publishing tool will help you to enhance your concurrent working on the case study. The team members will select a case study from the textbook. Details of the case study team project will be discussed in class during the early part of the term.

The schedule is tentative and subject to change. The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the schedule for the successful progress of the course. It is the student's responsibility to know if, when, and what changes have been made to the schedule.
