COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course will focus on a variety of counseling theories and interventions based on these theories. Students will have an opportunity to understand client problems from several different theoretical positions and to utilize techniques and strategies in order to bring about client change. By the end of this course the student is expected to demonstrate a working knowledge of the following: 1. To know and understand a variety of counseling theories and interventions based on those theories. 2. The ability to apply theoretical approaches in simulated counseling situations. 3. Awareness of one's own counseling strengths and weaknesses in utilizing the theories and counseling strategies. 4. The ability to apply theoretical and practical skills to particular problems encountered in the counseling field. 5. Will demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of special populations. 6. Will be familiar with ethical and professional issues in counseling interventions.
CLASS FORMAT: Class format will consist of class lecture and/or discussion, role plays, simulated case studies, and experiential activities. This course is only a beginning course in counseling practices and you are not expected to be an expert. You are expected to come to class having read the material so that you may be an active and involved participant. Bring an open mind and be willing to take some risks to learn more about yourself and your ability to counsel others. Each week prior to reading the assigned material you are to take a pretest if one is provided in the manual, read your text, and lastly complete assigned surveys and activities listed in both the Corey and Egan Manual. The exercises in the manuals will be used as a basis for discussion in class. You are expected to think critically, take positions on issues, and challenge yourself to develop your thoughts and your skills both verbally and in written form.
CONFIDENTIALITY: Often in Counseling classes students feel freer to share information about themselves, therefore, students must be sensitive to the rights of privacy of others. It is important that all information shared in class remain confidential.
