Unit Courses

What is a unit course?

A unit course is an undergraduate, for-credit, university course specifically designed to meet unit needs. While maintaining the same high quality academic standards, faculty credentials, and program requirements offered in all UMUC programs, UMUC Europe can customize the format of undergraduate courses to meet a variety of unit educational needs.

When and where can a unit course be scheduled?

Courses offered exclusively to units need not correspond with regular UMUC term dates. Scheduling, therefore, can be flexible and designed for the convenience of the unit as long as the required credit contact hours are met. For example, the course can be daytime, evenings, or weekends at times and locations convenient for the unit. In some cases, unit courses may be scheduled to start with as little as a weeks notice and can accommodate deployment schedules. The course can also be offered on-site at the unit if classroom space is available.

Which classes are offered?

Any UMUC one or three credit course may be offered as a unit course; however, each course requires the approval of the education services officer and the availability of a qualified faculty member. Popular unit requests include courses in English, foreign languages (including Arabic), computer studies, information systems management, math, management studies, speech, psychology, history, and government. UMUC is ready to provide additional information regarding specific courses that your unit may need.

How can a unit course benefit the unit?

All service branches can benefit from unit courses. UMUC can provide customized on-site academic courses for airmen, marines, sailors, soldiers, and civilians. We would be pleased to suggest specific courses that will maximize a unit’s investment in education.

What are the benefits for various military branches?

UMUC provides degree paths that can assist individuals in making the most of their military careers and education opportunities. For airmen stationed in Europe, UMUC offers unit courses that meet CCAF requirements and may be applied towards a CCAF Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in a field that corresponds closely to an individual’s Air Force specialty. Airmen may also apply these courses towards other advanced degrees. Soldiers benefit from unit courses by receiving promotion points for completed courses and may be attributed college credit for their previous military schools and training. For sailors, UMUC offers associate's and bachelor’s degree programs that correspond with Navy ratings and will apply relevant military credit toward sailors’ degree programs to accelerate their graduation date.

Thank you for your interest in our unit course offerings.
