Additional Site Information

NATO Joint Command Lisbon is located on the Atlantic coast, in the municipality of Oeiras, about  10 miles west of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.

The base is situated across from St. Julian's Fort (Sao Juliao da Barra), a Portuguese fortress dating back to the 16th century. The fort is a fine example of renaissance military architecture and is one of the country's main maritime constructions. Presently, it is the official residence of the defence minister. On base several coffee shops are available, as well as a library, fitness facility, and swimming pool. There is no lodging available on base.

Portugal is one of the original 12 NATO nations and its founding member. The NATO command in Portugal was created in 1967 and has been in its present location in Oeiras since 1972. In March 2004, this regional headquarters of South Atlantic became the Allied Joint Command Headquarters Lisbon. The command was purposefully designed as a small but robust headquarters that, when fully operational, would be capable of rapidly deploying anywhere in the NATO area of responsibility and beyond. Once deployed, the headquarters will be capable of providing a sea-based command and control element during the initial stages of operations ranging the entire operational spectrum, from peacekeeping to war fighting.

Lisbon (Lisboa) is Europe's most westerly capital. It lies on the Tagus River, just where the river enters the Atlantic ocean and it has one of the best harbors in Europe. The Portuguese Discoveries and the launching of the maritime trade empire made Lisbon a true world capital and Portugal a major colonial power with territories in South America, Africa, India, and China. Today Lisbon is a vibrant cosmopolitan city.
