Directions and Parking
The UMUC office is located in the FOB Shank Education Center located in the same building as the Brigade S-1 and AAFES on the West Side of the FOB. The education center is located just across from the Dutch PX and immediately next to the Brigade S-1.
Computer Labs
A computer lab is provided through the Army Learning Center (ALC) in the education center. The ALC is open daily from 0700-1900.

Testing Services
Placement tests for English and math courses and proctored exams for distance education courses are available through your local UMUC office. Please contact the field representative to schedule an appointment.

Additional Site Information
Forward Operating Base Shank is located near the town of Pul-i-Alam in the Logar province. Situated in a picturesque river valley south of Kabul, it is surrounded by mountains and villages on all sides. FOB Shank is approximately 7,000 feet above sea level, with some landing zones exceeding 10,000 feet in elevation. The base is continually growing in size; alongside the U.S. Army are soldiers of the Czech Republic and teams of U.S. and Czech experts.
Three hot meals are provided free of charge per day. Each DEFAC stays open 24 hours. Outside of regular meals, one can have a snack or sandwich at any time day or night. There is a local Afghan restaurant on the east side of the FOB, as well as coffee shops, gift shops, and electronics shops.
