Individualized Learning Courses
The University of Maryland University College-Europe is pleased to announce a new distance education format, Individualized Learning (IL).
IL courses….are for students whose schedules, remote locations, and/or unreliable Internet connections make it impossible for them to enroll in scheduled courses. IL courses are taken by each student individually. The lessons, academic materials, and supplemental readings are stored on a CD-ROM to enable the student to carry the course wherever he or she goes. A comprehensive syllabus, accompanying the CD-ROM, guides the student through the textbooks and requirements.
IL students….must submit a special request form to the DE Office for authorization to register for an IL course. Students may apply 3 semester hours of IL course credits towards a UMUC certificate, 6 s.h. towards a UMUC associate degree, or 12 s.h. towards a UMUC bachelor's degree.
IL courses….each have a faculty "course manager" who responds to the student’s questions and grades assignments. The course manager will remain in contact with the student by telephone, postal mail, fax, and/or e-mail.
IL students….are not required to be in a classroom or access online resources. Students, however, must have access to a PC or laptop computer with a CD-ROM drive.
IL courses….are rigorous, require students to work with considerable independence, and include a proctored final exam. Any course prerequisites should be completed prior to taking an IL course.
IL students…have 15-weeks to complete the course. Students can begin work as soon as they receive their course materials. Students must complete and turn in assignments on a mandated schedule.
